An artificial urinary sphincter made of two-way shape memory NiTi alloy embedded in silicon rubber is designed for prosthesis surgery in case of patients who suffer from urinary incontinence. The metallic part curves down when actuated by electrical current and straightens up when the current stops. This produces a smart composite for urination control in patients inflicted with spinal cord injury.

August 1st, 2010 Solar Tsunami

On August 1st, 2010 almost the entire earth faced a tumult of activity erupting on one side of the sun. This created disordering in electromagnetic and infrared controlled equipments on the earth. White area on the upper left of the image from the Solar Dynamics Observatory of NASA shows the C3-class solar flare. A solar tsunami (wave-like structure, upper right), multiple filaments of magnetism lifting off the stellar surface, large-scale shaking of the solar corona, radio bursts, a coronal mass ejection and more have happened because of that event. The effect has been detected by our experimentation team in Tehran, as well.

The effect of adding Fe2O3 on the bioactivity of cured ionomer cement was examined in simulated body fluid (SBF). Although the polyacrylic acid and Fe2O3 are known as inhibitors for apatite formation, results clearly show that exposure of the cement to the SBF lead to the formation of rough layers of carbonated-apatite (Volmer–Weber growth). Interestingly, the addition of Fe2O3 to the cement structure decreases the possibility of acid–base reaction in ionomer cements due to the improved chemical durability of the glass. Therefore, more calcium ions were released from the cement at the initial stage of soaking which plays an important role in forming the surface apatite layer by heterogeneous nucleation via the OH- groups on the cement surface.

Enhancement of Research Activities at MERC during 9th Government

 Four-year term of the 9th government was accompanied with intense devotion which resulted in advancements of the scientific research institutes like Materials and Energy Research Center (MERC).


This institute received awards, appreciation plates and statues from such prestigious ranking institutions like The Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC), Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and local organizations throughout all these years.


Unprecedented increase in scientific projects, signing applied research contracts with the industrial and service organizations, signing memorandum of understanding with international educational and research organizations in line with the joint research activities, planning and signing of agreements with foreign scientific centers for admitting doctoral and post-doctoral guest students, commissioning of new laboratories and expanded laboratory services to help solving scientific problems of students and academia across the country, running tests for industrial and commercial institutes like Institute of Standard and Industrial Research, infrastructure development and enhancement of the research activities resulting in abrupt increase of the number of articles, books, patents and scientific publications have been the achievements of this period at MERC.



The latest achievement shows 4th Grade in the Laboratory Network Ranking of 2009 (1388) Nanotechnology Festival. This grade covers 2009 (1388) extensive efforts conducted at MERC. This latest rank shows 4 grades increase with respect to the previous year of 2008 (1387) which has been 8th in the Nanotechnology Laboratory Network Ranking system.
